Bar Practice

Barrister with more than 25 years’ experience specialising in criminal defence and native title.

Appearing in many complex criminal trials and appeals including Benbrika terrorist appeals in Court of Criminal Appeal ([2010] VSCA 281), R v Fields Supreme Court murder (verdict November 2016) and sexual offences trials as counsel, with junior counsel, in County Court.

Board Member HRV Appeals Board and appointed to Harness Racing Victoria’s Panel of Appeal Hearers beginning 25 February 2006 and continuing. Representing clients in thoroughbred racing and greyhound racing charged with serious offences and ownership issues.

Significant cases:
  • Binse v Williams & Anor Unreported Court of Appeal (Vic) 19 March 1997-Prison and prisoner’s rights.
  • Appeared as Junior Counsel in High Court of Australia-Mason CJ in complex Mabo style claim, issues of sovereignty, genocide and fiduciary relationship: Coe v. Commonwealth and State of New South Wales (1994) 68 A.L.J.R. at 110.
  • Appeared for Angus Arthur Smith on behalf of the Gunggari People v. Tenneco Energy Queensland Pty Ltd & Others (1996) 66 FCR 1-Injunction to restrain company building pipeline over land subject to native title.
